Abdul El-Sayed wins Michigan Senate seat, first Muslim senator-elect

Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has defeated Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan’s open Senate race, becoming the first Muslim elected to the United States Senate in history. With 80 percent of votes counted, El-Sayed led 51.8 percent to 46.2 percent and will replace retiring Senator Gary Peters in January when the new term begins.
